That's right everyone, it's roller derby time in Cleveland again! Last season ended with the Rolling Pin-Ups ending the three year championship reign of the Hellbombers. There's been a lot of skater turnover since then and I'm looking forward to a pretty exciting season, hopefully culminating in another Pin-Up championship! To start off Season 5 the Hellbombers are going head to head with the Cleveland Steamers in the first game while the Pin-Ups start their title defense against the Hard Knockers in the second game.
In the first game, the Hellbombers jumped out to a decent lead, but the Steamers fought back to take a small halftime lead. The second half was close with both teams exchanging leads back and forth. Every time it seemed like one team would grab the momentum, the other team would come back and retake the lead. The Hellbombers finally took control in the last few minutes ran the clock out when they took lead jammer in the last jam.
Once the second game started, you could see that the Pin-Ups were out to show why they are the defending champs. Behind the strong jamming of Punked Pixie, Eva Lucien, Hidden Ajennda and Soul Eater, it seemed like they took lead jammer at will as they ran out to a 34-0 lead and went into halftime up 75-20. Coming out of the half, Mommy's Little Monster and Vendetta Farfalle did their best to rally the Knockers, but it was too little, too late and the Pin-Ups ran away with the game, 138-63.
All in all, it was a great night of derby (especially as a Pin-Ups fan). The Steamers showed that they just might be a dark horse this year, the Hellbombers showed that they're not going away just because they had a lot of turnover, the Knockers are gonna play hard til the end of the game and the Pin-Ups showed that last year wasn't a fluke and they're out to repeat. I can only hope that the rest of the season lives up to the standard this bout set!
